Jonathan Lin, Sony Mobile Taiwan’s general manager, explains that the Japanese company’s smartphones isn’t quite ready for Quad HD screens (1440 x 2560 pixel resolution), which is why Sony’s newly unveiled XPERIA Z3+ only sports a 5.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels.

According to Focus Taiwan, Lin said at a press event in Taiwan, “At the moment, making the move to 2K technology on 5- to 5.5-inch screens does not seem able to achieve market segmentation, so we have no plans to launch 2K phones.”

It’s a different story with tablets, Lin confirms, as the Sony XPERIA Z4 Tablet sports a 2K screen.

Aside from the 5.2-inch 1080p screen, the XPERIA Z3+ sports a 20.7-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 32 GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot (support for as much as 128 GB), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor with four cores clocked at 2 GHz and four cores clocked at 1.5 GHz, an Adreno 430 GPU, 3 GB of RAM, and a 2,930 mAh battery. It has an IP 65/68 rating for dust and waterproofing. IP68 means that the phone can be submerged in water as deep as 3 meters (9.8 feet) without getting damaged. It measures 146.3 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm and weighs in at 144 g. It runs Android 5.0 (Lollipop) out of the box. It will be launched globally in June.
